As an Interior Architecture student I often hear some misconceptions about my field of study. When people hear that I'm a future interior architect they immediately think that in a few years I could redo their living room. Which is true, but an interior architect is not someone who just picks which colour goes best on your wall and which decoration looks great on your dining table.
So what most people have in mind is a little bit different than what I am actually learning and doing. At school we learn about the construction of furniture and buildings. We transform both interiors and exteriors. For the exterior we choose shape, construction, materials and even layouts for gardens. For the interior we design customized furniture for a specific place, pick designer seating and think about which materials we are going to use on the walls, floors, furniture, counters etc. We also think about the construction behind it. For example, if we choose to add a wall or make an extension of a house, we draw the complete structure.
An interior architect is not someone who just picks which colour goes best on your wall and which decoration looks great on your dining table.
Let me point out one of the differences between architecture students and us. We draw the complete construction of furniture such as closets. Architecture students just draw the general shape of the furniture. Aside from that, architecture students spend way more time on the total design and construction of buildings and the engineering behind it. Something that we as interior architecture students do not often do.
Another misconception about my field of study is that it's easy. A lot of people say this because we don't have 'a lot' of theoretical exams. However, this doesn't mean that we don't do anything. Designing is something you can't just make yourself do. You can't force yourself to have a creative idea, it takes time, talent and a lot of trial and error. But it isn't just about inspiration, it's about execution as well. Technical drawing, sketches, sculptures etc. aren't made in a blink of an eye.
You just need to know your passions and find the thing you're good at. If you prefer a more theoretical field of study, great. If you're more creative and like to design stuff, that's just as good. I am a creative soul and like to design because it is about so much more than the things I mentioned above. It's about getting to know people, their likes, their habits and designing a space that makes them feel at home and happy. It's about giving shape to our world, respecting it and making it more enjoyable.
