THE ART OF DECLUTTERING

Our society today is very materialistic. We keep buying new things that are trending only to end up with multiples of the same. Things we don't really need or use anymore. So I think it is important to ask yourself the following questions: Do I really need or use this? Am I holding on to something because I love it or because I think I should love it? Does this item make me happy? Should I use this space for something else?

As my room was getting more cramped with stuff I don't really need, I decided to go though the stuff I own and asked myself if I really needed this item. Turns out that a lot of these things did not make me happy since I like to stay very organized. However decluttering is not only about throwing things away and staying organized. It's about giving yourself a peace of mind, making room for new people and experiences. It's about growing as a person as well.

Does this item make me happy? Should I use this space for something else?

But where do you start? You get yourselfs some garbage bags and storage baskets. Now you can make piles off things you want to keep, get rid of or donate. Here are some items to declutter:

- makeup and toiletries you don't use anymore

- old magazines and paperwork

- clothes that don't fit or suit you

- books you won't read and CDs you won't listen to again

- anything broken

- old bags

- pens and stationary you don't use

- wrapping paper scraps

- small pieces of cardboard you won't use again (for the interior architecture students)

- socks with holes an tights with ladders

- old electronics

- put old photos and documents on a external harddrive

- things you don't enjoy

For decluttering the mind, think of what takes up to much of your valuable time, people who make you feel bad about yourself or any thought that contains the words: 'I should've or I should be doing' and erase it.
